Bishop's theorem on analytic sets
Builds on Complex analytic varietyDimension of an analytic setComplex manifoldHausdorff measure
Statement
Let be an open subset of , let be an analytic subset of , and let be an integer. Let be an analytic subset of of pure dimension . Suppose that every point of has a neighbourhood in such that , where is the -dimensional Hausdorff measure on . Then the closure of in is an analytic subset of , of pure dimension .
Remarks
No condition on the dimension of is needed; it is replaced by the condition that has locally finite -dimensional volume near . The idea of the proof is to use the volume bound to control generic linear projections to . Near each point of , the closure then projects properly, with a bounded number of sheets. The symmetric functions of the sheets are bounded holomorphic functions outside a thin set, and they extend. Example: let in and ; the area of in each ball is finite, and indeed is the -axis. The volume hypothesis is needed: for and the same , the closure is not analytic, so by the theorem has infinite area near every point of . The theorem also holds with a complex manifold, since the statement is local.

For a student
Bishop's theorem strengthens the Remmert–Stein theorem, in which the exceptional set must have smaller dimension than . Volume bounds of this kind come naturally from Wirtinger's inequality and Stokes' theorem, which makes the theorem useful for limits of analytic cycles. It is a main step in proving that limits of complex analytic cycles with bounded volume are analytic.
