Definition

Let XX be a complex manifold and let AA be an analytic subset of XX. Let reg⁡A\operatorname{reg} A be the set of regular points of AA. At a regular point zz, the set AA is near zz a complex submanifold, and dim⁡zA\dim_z A is its complex dimension at zz. For an arbitrary point a∈Aa \in A, the dimension of AA at aa is dim⁡aA=lim sup⁡z→a, z∈reg⁡Adim⁡zA.\dim_a A = \limsup_{z \to a,\ z \in \operatorname{reg} A} \dim_z A. The dimension of AA is dim⁡A=sup⁡a∈Adim⁡aA\dim A = \sup_{a \in A} \dim_a A, with dim⁡∅=−∞\dim \emptyset = -\infty. The set AA has pure dimension kk if dim⁡aA=k\dim_a A = k for every a∈Aa \in A.

Remarks

The definition makes sense because reg⁡A\operatorname{reg} A is dense in AA; at a regular point aa it gives back the manifold dimension. Example: let A={z1z3=0, z2z3=0}A = \set{z_1 z_3 = 0,\ z_2 z_3 = 0} in ℂ3\C^3, the union of the plane P={z3=0}P = \set{z_3 = 0} and the line L={z1=z2=0}L = \set{z_1 = z_2 = 0}. The regular points are the points of P∖{0}P \setminus \set{0}, of dimension 22, and the points of L∖{0}L \setminus \set{0}, of dimension 11. So dim⁡0A=2\dim_0 A = 2, dim⁡aA=1\dim_a A = 1 for a∈L∖{0}a \in L \setminus \set{0}, and dim⁡A=2\dim A = 2. Non-example of pure dimension: this set AA does not have pure dimension, since its local dimension takes the values 11 and 22. It also shows that the dimension is not the number of variables minus the number of equations, which would be 11 here. There are equivalent forms of dim⁡aA\dim_a A when X=ℂnX = \C^n. It is the Krull dimension of 𝒪n,a/ℐ(Aa)\mathcal{O}_{n,a}/\mathcal{I}(A_a). It is the largest of the integers dd given by the local parametrization theorem for the irreducible components of the germ AaA_a. It is the smallest kk such that some complex affine subspace of codimension kk through aa meets AA in the isolated point aa.
