Builds on Complex analytic varietyDimension of an analytic setComplex manifold

Statement

Let XX be a complex manifold, let EE be an analytic subset of XX, and let k≥1k \ge 1 be an integer. Let AA be an analytic subset of X∖EX \setminus E of pure dimension kk. Suppose that dim⁡E<k\dim E < k. Then the closure A‾\overline{A} of AA in XX is an analytic subset of XX, of pure dimension kk.

Remarks

The question is local, so one may assume that XX is a neighbourhood of a point of EE in ℂn\C^n. The proof is by induction on the dimension of EE and uses projections. After a generic linear change of coordinates, the projection of A‾\overline{A} to ℂk\C^k is proper near the point. Then A‾\overline{A} is described by the canonical defining polynomials of this branched covering. Their coefficients are bounded holomorphic functions outside a thin set, so they extend by the Riemann extension theorem. Example: A={z2=0}∖{0}A = \set{z_2 = 0} \setminus \set{0} is an analytic subset of ℂ2∖{0}\C^2 \setminus \set{0} of pure dimension 11, and E={0}E = \set{0} has dimension 00, so A‾\overline{A}, the z1z_1-axis, is analytic. The hypothesis dim⁡E<k\dim E < k is necessary. Let E={z1=0}E = \set{z_1 = 0} in ℂ2\C^2 and A={(z1,e1/z1):z1≠0}A = \set{(z_1, e^{1/z_1}) : z_1 \ne 0}, an analytic subset of ℂ2∖E\C^2 \setminus E of pure dimension 1=dim⁡E1 = \dim E. Since e1/z1e^{1/z_1} takes every nonzero value, and tends to 00 along the negative real axis, in every neighbourhood of z1=0z_1 = 0, the closure A‾\overline{A} is A∪EA \cup E. It is not analytic: the components of an analytic curve other than EE would meet EE in a discrete set, but AA accumulates at every point of EE.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is a basic extension result in complex analytic geometry, in the spirit of the Riemann extension theorem for functions. It gives a short proof of Chow's theorem, by extending the cone over an analytic subset of projective space across the origin. Bishop's theorem replaces the dimension condition on EE by a volume condition on AA, and Shiffman's theorem by a Hausdorff measure condition on EE.
