Definition
Let be a complex manifold and let be an analytic subset of . A point is a regular point of if it has an open neighbourhood in with the following property. The set is a complex submanifold of . A point is a singular point of if it is not a regular point. The sets of regular and singular points are written and .
Remarks
Example: for the cusp in , every point is regular, since the gradient of is nonzero there and the holomorphic implicit function theorem applies. The origin is singular. If were a complex submanifold near , it would have dimension and be a graph over its tangent line at . The secant directions from to tend to the -axis, so this tangent line is the -axis, but the projection to it is two-to-one near . Regularity is a property of the set, not of the equations. The set in is the line , so all its points are regular, although the gradient of vanishes on . The set is open in by definition, and it is dense in . The set is a closed analytic subset of that is nowhere dense in ; this is a theorem, not a direct consequence of the definition.
