Definition
Let . Consider pairs where is an open neighbourhood of in and is an analytic subset of . Two pairs and are equivalent if there is an open neighbourhood of with . A germ of an analytic set at is an equivalence class for this relation; the class of is written .
Remarks
This is the notion of germ applied to analytic sets. Inclusion, finite union and finite intersection of germs are defined through representatives on a common neighbourhood. To a germ one attaches the ideal of all holomorphic germs that have a representative vanishing on a representative of ; it is a radical ideal. Conversely, an ideal with generators defines the germ of the common zero set of representatives . Example: the sets and in have the same germ at , since they agree on the ball of radius about . Non-example: the sets and have different germs at . Indeed, every neighbourhood of contains a point with , which lies in the first set but not the second. The germ of at a point is the empty germ.
