Statement

Let A0A_0 be an irreducible analytic germ at 0∈ℂn0 \in \C^n. Then there are an integer dd with 0≤d≤n0 \le d \le n and linear coordinates z=(z′,z′′)z = (z', z'') on ℂn\C^n with z′∈ℂdz' \in \C^d and z′′∈ℂn−dz'' \in \C^{n-d}. There are also open polydiscs U′⊆ℂdU' \subseteq \C^d and U′′⊆ℂn−dU'' \subseteq \C^{n-d} centred at 00. With U=U′×U′′U = U' \times U'' and π(z′,z′′)=z′\pi(z', z'') = z', the following properties hold.

  1. There is a representative AA of A0A_0 that is an analytic subset of UU, and π ⁣:A→U′\pi \colon A \to U' is a surjective proper map with finite fibres.
  2. There are an analytic subset Δ⊊U′\Delta \subsetneq U' and an integer k≥1k \ge 1 such that π ⁣:A∖π−1(Δ)→U′∖Δ\pi \colon A \setminus \pi^{-1}(\Delta) \to U' \setminus \Delta is a kk-sheeted covering map.
  3. The set A∖π−1(Δ)A \setminus \pi^{-1}(\Delta) is a connected complex submanifold of UU of dimension dd, and it is dense in AA.

Remarks

The integer dd is the dimension of the germ A0A_0, and the coordinates can be taken generic: a dense open set of linear coordinate systems works. The proof uses the ideal 𝔭\mathfrak{p} of A0A_0, which is prime, and Noether normalization in the analytic setting. After a generic change of coordinates, the Weierstrass preparation theorem makes 𝒪n,0/𝔭\mathcal{O}_{n,0}/\mathfrak{p} a finite extension of 𝒪d,0\mathcal{O}_{d,0}, the germs in z′z' alone. Here dd is the largest number of variables for which 𝒪d,0→𝒪n,0/𝔭\mathcal{O}_{d,0} \to \mathcal{O}_{n,0}/\mathfrak{p} is injective. A primitive element of the fraction field extension and its discriminant give the set Δ\Delta and the number kk of sheets. Example: for the cusp A={z12=z23}A = \set{z_1^2 = z_2^3} in ℂ2\C^2, take z′=z2z' = z_2 and π(z1,z2)=z2\pi(z_1, z_2) = z_2. Over z2≠0z_2 \ne 0 the fibre consists of the two square roots of z23z_2^3, so Δ={0}\Delta = \set{0} and k=2k = 2; the set A∖{0}A \setminus \set{0} is the image of the punctured disc under t↦(t3,t2)t \mapsto (t^3, t^2), hence connected. Irreducibility is needed for the connectedness in part 3. For A={z1z2=0}A = \set{z_1 z_2 = 0} and any linear projection to a line with finite fibres on AA, the complement of π−1(Δ)\pi^{-1}(\Delta) has a component in each axis.

Going deeper

For a student

The local parametrization is the basic structure theorem of local analytic geometry. It gives the dimension of an analytic set and shows that the regular points are dense. It also yields the Rückert Nullstellensatz, and it is the analytic counterpart of Noether normalization for affine varieties. The number kk of sheets for generic coordinates is the multiplicity of the germ at 00.
