Gram–Schmidt vectors are orthogonal
Builds on Gram–Schmidt processOrthogonal vectors
Statement
Let be an inner product space over or , and let be linearly independent. Let be the vectors of the Gram–Schmidt process. Then are nonzero and pairwise orthogonal, and
Remarks
The proof is by induction on : by construction, for . The vector is nonzero, because is not in . If the are only spanning, then the process produces some zero vectors, and dropping them still gives an orthogonal family with the same span.
