Greatest element
Builds on Partial order
Definition
Let be a partially ordered set and let be a subset of . An element is the greatest element of when for each .
Remarks
Another name is maximum. By antisymmetry, a set has at most one greatest element. A greatest element is a maximal element and an upper bound of that lies in . The interval in has no greatest element.
