Statement

Let 𝒜\mathcal{A}, ℬ\mathcal{B} and 𝒞\mathcal{C} be abelian categories, and assume that 𝒜\mathcal{A} and ℬ\mathcal{B} have enough injectives. Let G ⁣:𝒜→ℬG \colon \mathcal{A} \to \mathcal{B} and F ⁣:ℬ→𝒞F \colon \mathcal{B} \to \mathcal{C} be left exact additive functors. Assume that GG sends every injective object of 𝒜\mathcal{A} to an FF-acyclic object of ℬ\mathcal{B}. Then for every object XX of 𝒜\mathcal{A} there is a first quadrant spectral sequence E2p,q=(RpF)(RqG)(X)⟹Rp+q(F∘G)(X),E_2^{p,q} = (R^p F)(R^q G)(X) \Longrightarrow R^{p+q}(F \circ G)(X), natural in XX, where RnR^n denotes the right derived functors.

Remarks

To prove it, take an injective resolution X→I∙X \to I^\bullet and a Cartan–Eilenberg resolution of the complex G(I∙)G(I^\bullet). Apply FF, and compare the two spectral sequences of the resulting double complex. Because G(In)G(I^n) is FF-acyclic, one of them collapses and computes Rn(F∘G)(X)R^n(F \circ G)(X); the other has the stated E2E_2 page. Without the acyclicity hypothesis the derived functor of F∘GF \circ G is not computed by this double complex, and the statement can fail. One example is the Leray spectral sequence, where G=f∗G = f_* for a continuous map ff and FF is the global sections functor. Another is the Lyndon–Hochschild–Serre spectral sequence, where GG and FF take invariants under a normal subgroup and under the quotient group. The low degree terms of the spectral sequence give the exact sequence 0→R1F(GX)→R1(FG)(X)→F(R1G(X))→R2F(GX)→R2(FG)(X)0 \to R^1 F(G X) \to R^1(F G)(X) \to F(R^1 G(X)) \to R^2 F(G X) \to R^2(F G)(X).

Going deeper

For a student

In practice the theorem is used in low degrees, through the five-term exact sequence. It is also used when the E2E_2 page vanishes outside one row or column, so that Rn(F∘G)R^n(F \circ G) can be read off directly. In the language of derived categories it says that R(F∘G)≅RF∘RGR(F \circ G) \cong RF \circ RG.
