Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let D⊆ℂnD \subseteq \C^n be a bounded open set with C1C^1 boundary ∂D\partial D such that ℂn∖Dˉ\C^n \setminus \bar D is connected. Let f ⁣:∂D→ℂf \colon \partial D \to \C be a C1C^1 function that satisfies the tangential Cauchy–Riemann equations on ∂D\partial D. Then there is a continuous function FF on Dˉ\bar D that is holomorphic on DD and satisfies F=fF = f on ∂D\partial D.

Remarks

The proof uses the Bochner–Martinelli formula. The Bochner–Martinelli integral of ff over ∂D\partial D defines a function F−F_- on DD and a function F+F_+ on ℂn∖Dˉ\C^n \setminus \bar D. The tangential Cauchy–Riemann equations make both functions holomorphic, and the jump formula gives F−−F+=fF_- - F_+ = f on ∂D\partial D. The function F+F_+ tends to 00 at infinity. On each complex line that misses Dˉ\bar D it is an entire function of one variable tending to 00, hence zero by Liouville's theorem. These lines fill a nonempty open set. Since ℂn∖Dˉ\C^n \setminus \bar D is connected, F+=0F_+ = 0 by the identity theorem, so F=F−F = F_- has boundary values ff.

Example: if ff is the restriction to ∂D\partial D of a function holomorphic near Dˉ\bar D, then ff satisfies the tangential Cauchy–Riemann equations and FF is that function.

The hypothesis n≥2n \ge 2 is necessary. For n=1n = 1 the tangential condition is empty. The function f(z)=zˉf(z) = \bar z on the unit circle has no holomorphic extension to the disc that is continuous up to the boundary. Indeed ∫∣z∣=1zˉ dz=2πi≠0\int_{\abs{z} = 1} \bar z \, dz = 2\pi i \ne 0, whereas Cauchy's theorem would make the integral of such an extension zero.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is a boundary version of Hartogs's extension theorem. Applied to the restriction of a holomorphic function defined near ∂D\partial D, it gives the extension of that function to DD. It is the starting point of the theory of CR functions on real hypersurfaces and of their holomorphic extension.
