Builds on Holomorphic function of several variablesCompact setConnected setOpen set

Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2, let D⊆ℂnD \subseteq \C^n be a connected open set, and let K⊆DK \subseteq D be a compact set such that D∖KD \setminus K is connected. Then every holomorphic function ff on D∖KD \setminus K is the restriction of a unique holomorphic function FF on DD.

Remarks

A short proof uses the ∂ˉ\bar\partial operator. Choose a smooth function χ\chi with compact support in DD that equals 11 near KK, and let g=(1−χ)fg = (1 - \chi) f, extended by 00 on KK. The form ∂ˉg=−f ∂ˉχ\bar\partial g = -f \, \bar\partial \chi is smooth with compact support in ℂn\C^n, and for n≥2n \ge 2 the equation ∂ˉu=∂ˉg\bar\partial u = \bar\partial g has a solution uu with compact support. Then F=g−uF = g - u is holomorphic on DD. The function uu vanishes on the unbounded component of the complement of the support of ∂ˉg\bar\partial g. So F=fF = f on a nonempty open subset of D∖KD \setminus K, hence on all of D∖KD \setminus K by the identity theorem.

The hypothesis n≥2n \ge 2 is necessary: 1/z1/z is holomorphic on ℂ∖{0}\C \setminus \set{0} and does not extend to ℂ\C. Connectedness of D∖KD \setminus K is also necessary. In the unit ball of ℂn\C^n let KK be the sphere ∣z∣=1/2\abs{z} = 1/2. The function equal to 00 inside KK and to 11 outside is holomorphic on the ball minus KK, but it has no holomorphic extension.

Example: every holomorphic function on the punctured ball {0<∣z∣<1}\set{0 < \abs{z} < 1} in ℂ2\C^2 extends holomorphically over the origin.

For a student

The theorem is the first sign that domains in ℂn\C^n, n≥2n \ge 2, carry hidden constraints for holomorphic functions. It implies that the zeros and the singularities of holomorphic functions are never isolated when n≥2n \ge 2. It leads to the notions of domain of holomorphy and envelope of holomorphy, which describe how far all holomorphic functions on a domain extend. The proof sketched above shows the role of the compactly supported solution of ∂ˉu=v\bar\partial u = v, which exists only when n≥2n \ge 2.
