Hartogs figure
Example
Let and write a point of as with , and . Let be the unit polydisc, and fix and . The Hartogs figure is the connected open set It is the union of a thin column and a shell inside .
Every holomorphic function on extends to a holomorphic function on all of . Fix with and put The circle lies in the shell, so the integrand is defined, and is holomorphic by differentiation under the integral sign. For , the one-variable function is holomorphic on the whole unit disc, so the Cauchy integral formula gives there. The sets where and are both defined form a connected open set, so the identity theorem gives on all of it. Gluing and gives the extension to .
Remarks
So is not a domain of holomorphy: every holomorphic function on continues to the larger set . This is the basic instance of Hartogs's extension theorem. The extra variables are essential: in one variable the shell alone is the annulus , and is holomorphic there but does not extend to the unit disc.
