Idempotent semiring
Builds on SemiringPartial orderFree monoid
Definition
Let be a semiring. The semiring is idempotent if for all .
Remarks
In an idempotent semiring, the relation is a partial order. For this order, is the least upper bound of and , the element is the least element, and multiplication is monotone on both sides. Example: the Boolean semiring with and is idempotent, since . Example: the subsets of the free monoid on an alphabet , with union as addition and concatenation as multiplication, form an idempotent semiring, since . Non-example: with the usual operations is a semiring but is not idempotent, since . A ring is idempotent only if it is the zero ring, since gives . Idempotent semirings are also called dioids.
