Definition

Let MM and NN be smooth manifolds, let p∈Mp \in M and let k≥0k \ge 0 be an integer. Let ff and gg be smooth maps into NN, each defined on an open neighbourhood of pp in MM. Then ff and gg have the same kk-jet at pp if both conditions hold.

  1. f(p)=g(p)f(p) = g(p).
  2. Take a chart xx of MM around pp and a chart yy of NN around f(p)f(p). Then y∘f∘x−1y \circ f \circ x^{-1} and y∘g∘x−1y \circ g \circ x^{-1} have equal partial derivatives of every order 1,…,k1, \dots, k at x(p)x(p).

This is an equivalence relation. The kk-jet of ff at pp, written jpkfj^k_p f, is the equivalence class of ff. The set of all kk-jets at pp of maps from MM to NN is written Jpk(M,N)J^k_p(M, N).

Remarks

Condition 2 does not depend on the charts, by the chain rule. Indeed, the derivatives up to order kk of a composite depend only on those of its factors. The jet jpkfj^k_p f depends only on the germ of ff at pp. For M=ℝnM = \R^n and N=ℝN = \R, the kk-jet of ff at pp is the same data as its Taylor polynomial of degree kk at pp.

Example: on ℝ\R, f(x)=sin⁡xf(x) = \sin x and g(x)=xg(x) = x have the same 22-jet at 00. Indeed f(0)=g(0)=0f(0) = g(0) = 0, f′(0)=g′(0)=1f'(0) = g'(0) = 1 and f′′(0)=g′′(0)=0f''(0) = g''(0) = 0.

Non-example: f(x)=exf(x) = e^x and g(x)=1+xg(x) = 1 + x have the same 11-jet at 00 but not the same 22-jet. Condition 2 fails for order 22, since f′′(0)=1f''(0) = 1 and g′′(0)=0g''(0) = 0.
