Definition
Let . The Kadomtsev–Petviashvili equation is the partial differential equation for an unknown real function of and , where subscripts denote partial derivatives. The case is called KP-II and the case is called KP-I.
Remarks
Example: let be a solution of the Korteweg–De Vries equation , and put . Then the bracket vanishes and , so solves both KP-I and KP-II.
Non-example: is not a solution, because the first term is while .
Other normalisations are used, for example with . They reduce to the form above by scaling the variables, and the sign of the term relative to the dispersive term decides between KP-I and KP-II.
