Statement

Let XX be a compact complex manifold of dimension nn, and let LL be a positive line bundle on XX. For p≥0p \ge 0 let ΩXp\Omega_X^p be the sheaf of holomorphic pp-forms on XX. Then Hq(X,ΩXp⊗L)=0whenever p+q>n,H^q(X, \Omega_X^p \otimes L) = 0 \quad \text{whenever } p + q > n, where HqH^q is sheaf cohomology.

Remarks

The theorem is also called the Akizuki–Nakano vanishing theorem. A compact manifold with a positive line bundle is Kähler, with Kähler form ω=iΘh\omega = i\Theta_h given by the curvature of a positive metric hh. By Dolbeault's theorem, a class in Hq(X,ΩXp⊗L)H^q(X, \Omega^p_X \otimes L) is represented by an LL-valued harmonic (p,q)(p,q)-form uu. The Bochner–Kodaira–Nakano identity gives ⟨[iΘh,Λ]u,u⟩≤0\langle [i\Theta_h, \Lambda] u, u \rangle \le 0 for such uu, and with ω=iΘh\omega = i\Theta_h the operator [iΘh,Λ][i\Theta_h, \Lambda] is multiplication by p+q−np + q - n on (p,q)(p,q)-forms. So (p+q−n)∥u∥2≤0(p + q - n)\norm{u}^2 \le 0, which forces u=0u = 0 when p+q>np + q > n.

The case p=np = n is the Kodaira vanishing theorem: ΩXn=KX\Omega^n_X = K_X and Hq(X,KX⊗L)=0H^q(X, K_X \otimes L) = 0 for q≥1q \ge 1. By Serre duality the theorem is equivalent to Hq(X,ΩXp⊗L−1)=0H^q(X, \Omega^p_X \otimes L^{-1}) = 0 for p+q<np + q < n.

Positivity of LL cannot be dropped. For X=ℙ1X = \mathbb{P}^1, n=1n = 1, p=q=1p = q = 1 and LL trivial, one has H1(ℙ1,Ω1)≅ℂ≠0H^1(\mathbb{P}^1, \Omega^1) \cong \C \ne 0, though p+q=2>1p + q = 2 > 1.

For a student

The proof is a model of the Bochner technique: a curvature identity shows that harmonic representatives must vanish. It extends Kodaira vanishing, which is the case p=np = n, to all bundles of holomorphic forms. It is used to prove the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for cohomology and to control cohomology of Ωp\Omega^p on projective manifolds. For vector bundles the analogous result needs Nakano positivity, not just Griffiths positivity.
