Builds on Indeterminate moment problemHamburger moment problemMomentCarleman's condition
Statement
Let be a measure on of the form , where is Lebesgue integrable. Suppose that every moment is finite. If then the Hamburger moment problem for is indeterminate: there is a positive measure on with the same moments.
Remarks
The integral is well defined in , since where and is integrable. The result is a corollary of a density theorem of Krein: the integral is infinite if and only if the exponential sums with are dense in . Example: with and has , and for , so this density is not determined by its moments. For the integral diverges, and in fact Carleman's condition shows that the moment problem is determinate. The condition is sufficient for indeterminacy but not necessary.
Going deeper
For a student
It complements Carleman's condition, which gives determinacy when the moments grow slowly. The two meet at densities like : determinate for and indeterminate for . Versions for the Stieltjes problem on and converses under regularity hypotheses on are known.
