Laplace–Stieltjes transform
Builds on Bounded variationRiemann–Stieltjes integralLaplace transform
Definition
Let be a function of bounded variation on each interval with . The Laplace–Stieltjes transform of is the function defined for each complex for which the limit exists. Each integral is a Riemann–Stieltjes integral.
Remarks
Example: let and for , for . Then for every , so for every complex . If with continuous, then and is the Laplace transform of . Non-example: is of bounded variation on each , but diverges as for every , so no transform exists at any point. In probability one often uses the Lebesgue–Stieltjes form for a distribution function , which counts a possible jump at . With for it equals for with distribution function . If and for all , integration by parts gives for .
