Statement

Let T=(ti−j)1≤i,j≤NT = (t_{i-j})_{1 \le i, j \le N} be an N×NN \times N Toeplitz matrix over 𝕂\mathbb{K}, where 𝕂\mathbb{K} is ℝ\R or ℂ\C, and let y∈𝕂Ny \in \mathbb{K}^N. For n≤Nn \le N, let TnT^n be the leading n×nn \times n submatrix of TT, and assume that every TnT^n is invertible. Let fn,bn,xn∈𝕂nf^n, b^n, x^n \in \mathbb{K}^n solve Tnfn=e1T^n f^n = e_1, Tnbn=enT^n b^n = e_n and Tnxn=(y1,…,yn)TT^n x^n = (y_1, \dots, y_n)^T, where e1,ene_1, e_n are the first and last unit vectors. Put εfn=∑j=1ntn+1−jfjn,εbn=∑j=1nt−jbjn,εxn=∑j=1ntn+1−jxjn.\varepsilon_f^n = \sum_{j=1}^n t_{n+1-j} f^n_j, \qquad \varepsilon_b^n = \sum_{j=1}^n t_{-j} b^n_j, \qquad \varepsilon_x^n = \sum_{j=1}^n t_{n+1-j} x^n_j. Then 1−εfnεbn≠01 - \varepsilon_f^n \varepsilon_b^n \ne 0, and fn+1=11−εfnεbn((fn0)−εfn(0bn)),bn+1=11−εfnεbn((0bn)−εbn(fn0)),f^{n+1} = \frac{1}{1 - \varepsilon_f^n \varepsilon_b^n} \left( \begin{pmatrix} f^n \\ 0 \end{pmatrix} - \varepsilon_f^n \begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ b^n \end{pmatrix} \right), \qquad b^{n+1} = \frac{1}{1 - \varepsilon_f^n \varepsilon_b^n} \left( \begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ b^n \end{pmatrix} - \varepsilon_b^n \begin{pmatrix} f^n \\ 0 \end{pmatrix} \right), xn+1=(xn0)+(yn+1−εxn) bn+1.x^{n+1} = \begin{pmatrix} x^n \\ 0 \end{pmatrix} + (y_{n+1} - \varepsilon_x^n) \, b^{n+1}. Starting from f1=b1=1/t0f^1 = b^1 = 1/t_0 and x1=y1/t0x^1 = y_1 / t_0, the Levinson recursion computes the solution xNx^N of Tx=yT x = y in O(N2)O(N^2) arithmetic operations.

Remarks

The key fact is that both the leading and the trailing n×nn \times n blocks of Tn+1T^{n+1} equal TnT^n. So Tn+1(fn,0)T=(1,0,…,0,εfn)TT^{n+1} (f^n, 0)^T = (1, 0, \dots, 0, \varepsilon_f^n)^T and Tn+1(0,bn)T=(εbn,0,…,0,1)TT^{n+1} (0, b^n)^T = (\varepsilon_b^n, 0, \dots, 0, 1)^T, and the stated combinations give e1e_1 and en+1e_{n+1}. Similarly Tn+1(xn,0)T=(y1,…,yn,εxn)TT^{n+1} (x^n, 0)^T = (y_1, \dots, y_n, \varepsilon_x^n)^T, and adding (yn+1−εxn)bn+1(y_{n+1} - \varepsilon_x^n) b^{n+1} fixes the last entry. If 1−εfnεbn1 - \varepsilon_f^n \varepsilon_b^n were 00, the nonzero vector (fn,0)T−εfn(0,bn)T(f^n, 0)^T - \varepsilon_f^n (0, b^n)^T would lie in the kernel of Tn+1T^{n+1}. This vector is nonzero because its last entry is −εfnbnn-\varepsilon_f^n b^n_n, with εfn≠0\varepsilon_f^n \ne 0 and bnn=det⁡Tn−1/det⁡Tn≠0b^n_n = \det T^{n-1} / \det T^n \ne 0 by Cramer's rule. Each step costs O(n)O(n) operations, which gives the total O(N2)O(N^2), against O(N3)O(N^3) for Gaussian elimination. The hypothesis on all leading minors is needed: for T=(0110)T = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} the matrix is invertible but t0=0t_0 = 0, and the recursion cannot start. For symmetric positive definite TT every leading submatrix is invertible, and the special case of the Yule–Walker equations is the Levinson–Durbin recursion.

Going deeper

For a student

Toeplitz systems arise from stationary time series, in linear prediction, and in signal processing, where TT is a matrix of autocovariances. The recursion solves them in O(N2)O(N^2) time and O(N)O(N) memory, which made it a standard tool in speech coding. It can be unstable when some leading submatrix is nearly singular, even if TT itself is well conditioned; superfast O(Nlog⁡2N)O(N \log^2 N) algorithms also exist.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
