Lexicographic order

Builds on Partial orderCartesian product

Definition

Let (A,≤A)(A, \le_A) and (B,≤B)(B, \le_B) be partially ordered sets. The lexicographic order on the Cartesian product A×BA \times B is the relation ≤\le with (a,b)≤(a′,b′)(a, b) \le (a', b') when a<Aa′or(a=a′ and b≤Bb′).a <_A a' \quad \text{or} \quad (a = a' \text{ and } b \le_B b').

Remarks

It is a partial order. When ≤A\le_A and ≤B\le_B are total orders, it is a total order. Example: in ℕ×ℕ\mathbb{N} \times \mathbb{N}, (1,5)<(2,0)(1, 5) < (2, 0) and (2,0)<(2,3)(2, 0) < (2, 3). A dictionary orders words in the same way, letter by letter.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
