Liouville's formula
Builds on Fundamental matrixSystem of linear differential equations
Statement
Let be an open interval, let be continuous, and let be a differentiable function with for each . Then for each , where is the trace of .
Remarks
So is zero at each point of or at no point of . This shows that a fundamental matrix is invertible everywhere if it is invertible at one point. For a constant matrix , the formula gives . For the system that comes from , the trace is , and the formula is Abel's identity.
