Statement

Let AA be a real symmetric positive definite n×nn \times n matrix, let b∈ℝnb \in \R^n, and let ω>0\omega > 0. The modified Richardson iteration for the linear system Ax=bA x = b starts from any x(0)∈ℝnx^{(0)} \in \R^n and sets x(k+1)=x(k)+ω(b−Ax(k)).x^{(k+1)} = x^{(k)} + \omega \left( b - A x^{(k)} \right). Let λmin⁡\lambda_{\min} and λmax⁡\lambda_{\max} be the least and greatest eigenvalues of AA.

  1. The iterates converge to A−1bA^{-1} b for every bb and every x(0)x^{(0)} if and only if 0<ω<2/λmax⁡0 < \omega < 2 / \lambda_{\max}.
  2. The spectral radius of the iteration matrix I−ωAI - \omega A is least for ω=2/(λmin⁡+λmax⁡)\omega = 2 / (\lambda_{\min} + \lambda_{\max}). Its value there is (κ−1)/(κ+1)(\kappa - 1) / (\kappa + 1), where κ=λmax⁡/λmin⁡\kappa = \lambda_{\max} / \lambda_{\min}.

Remarks

The error satisfies ek+1=(I−ωA)eke_{k+1} = (I - \omega A) e_k, and I−ωAI - \omega A has the eigenvalues 1−ωλ1 - \omega \lambda for the eigenvalues λ\lambda of AA. All of them lie in (−1,1)(-1, 1) exactly when 0<ωλmax⁡<20 < \omega \lambda_{\max} < 2, which gives clause 1. The largest of ∣1−ωλmin⁡∣\abs{1 - \omega \lambda_{\min}} and ∣1−ωλmax⁡∣\abs{1 - \omega \lambda_{\max}} is least when the two are equal, which gives clause 2. Example: if AA has eigenvalues 11 and 33, the best choice is ω=1/2\omega = 1/2, and the error shrinks by the factor 1/21/2 at each step. The number κ\kappa is the condition number of AA, so the method is slow when AA is ill-conditioned.

Going deeper

For a student

Richardson iteration is the simplest stationary iterative method, and the Jacobi method is Richardson iteration applied to the system scaled by the diagonal. With a preconditioner PP it becomes x(k+1)=x(k)+ωP−1(b−Ax(k))x^{(k+1)} = x^{(k)} + \omega P^{-1} (b - A x^{(k)}), and the same analysis applies to P−1AP^{-1} A. For a symmetric positive definite AA it is gradient descent with a fixed step on 12xTAx−bTx\frac12 x^T A x - b^T x. Letting ω\omega vary with kk and choosing the steps as reciprocal Chebyshev nodes leads to Chebyshev iteration.
