Definition
Let , let be an open set, and let be a given function. The Monge–Ampère equation is the fully nonlinear PDE for a twice differentiable function , where is the Hessian matrix of . The most studied case is with , for an unknown convex function .
Remarks
Example: solves on , since is the identity matrix. Non-example: in , does not solve , since has determinant . The equation is elliptic at a solution when is positive definite, which is why one looks for convex solutions with . For it reads . The graph of has Gauss curvature , so prescribing is a Monge–Ampère equation. For convex functions that are not twice differentiable, the equation is understood in the sense of Aleksandrov or in the viscosity sense.
