Statement

Let HH be a real Hilbert space with inner product ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\ip{\cdot}{\cdot}. Let K ⁣:H→HK \colon H \to H be a bounded linear self-adjoint operator with ⟨Kv,v⟩≥0\ip{K v}{v} \ge 0 for all v∈Hv \in H. Let F ⁣:H→HF \colon H \to H be monotone, that is ⟨F(u)−F(v),u−v⟩≥0\ip{F(u) - F(v)}{u - v} \ge 0 for all u,v∈Hu, v \in H, and hemicontinuous, that is t↦⟨F(u+tv),w⟩t \mapsto \ip{F(u + t v)}{w} is continuous on [0,1][0, 1] for all u,v,w∈Hu, v, w \in H. Then for every f∈Hf \in H the abstract Hammerstein equation u+KF(u)=fu + K F(u) = f has exactly one solution u∈Hu \in H.

Remarks

Let SS be the positive square root of KK, so K=S2K = S^2 with SS self-adjoint. Look for uu of the form u=f−Svu = f - S v, and put G(v)=v−SF(f−Sv)G(v) = v - S F(f - S v). For a=f−Sva = f - S v and b=f−Swb = f - S w one finds ⟨G(v)−G(w),v−w⟩=∥v−w∥2+⟨F(a)−F(b),a−b⟩≥∥v−w∥2\ip{G(v) - G(w)}{v - w} = \norm{v - w}^2 + \ip{F(a) - F(b)}{a - b} \ge \norm{v - w}^2. So GG is strongly monotone, hemicontinuous and coercive, and Minty's theorem in Hilbert space, the case of the Browder–Minty theorem, gives a unique vv with G(v)=0G(v) = 0. Then u=f−Svu = f - S v solves the equation, and each solution uu gives a zero v=SF(u)v = S F(u) of GG, which yields uniqueness.

Application: let Ω⊆ℝm\Omega \subseteq \R^m be measurable with finite measure and H=L2(Ω)H = L^2(\Omega). Let kk be a symmetric square-integrable kernel with ∫ ⁣ ⁣∫k(x,t) v(x)v(t) dx dt≥0\int\!\!\int k(x, t)\, v(x) v(t)\, dx\, dt \ge 0 for all vv, and let g(x,u)g(x, u) be a Carathéodory function that is nondecreasing in uu with ∣g(x,u)∣≤a(x)+b∣u∣\abs{g(x, u)} \le a(x) + b \abs{u}, a∈L2(Ω)a \in L^2(\Omega). Then the Nemytskii operator F=NgF = N_g is continuous and monotone on L2(Ω)L^2(\Omega), and φ(x)+∫Ωk(x,t) g(t,φ(t)) dt=f(x)\varphi(x) + \int_\Omega k(x, t)\, g(t, \varphi(t))\, dt = f(x) has exactly one solution in L2(Ω)L^2(\Omega) for each f∈L2(Ω)f \in L^2(\Omega).

The signs matter. In H=ℝH = \R with K=1K = 1 and F(u)=−uF(u) = -u, which is not monotone, the equation reads 0=f0 = f and has no solution for f≠0f \ne 0.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is one of the main uses of monotone operator theory outside partial differential equations. The trick with the square root SS moves the problem to one where the operator is strongly monotone, which Browder–Minty theory handles directly. Positive kernels arise as Green's functions of self-adjoint boundary value problems, so the theorem gives existence and uniqueness for −u′′+g(x,u)=f-u'' + g(x, u) = f with Dirichlet conditions when gg is nondecreasing in uu. Versions without symmetry of KK and in Banach spaces exist, where KK maps X∗X^* to XX and FF maps XX to X∗X^*.
