Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1, let ww be a weight on ℝn\R^n, and let MM be the Hardy–Littlewood maximal function operator. For 1≤p<∞1 \le p < \infty write Lp(w)L^p(w) for the Lp space of the measure w(x) dxw(x) \, dx, and w(E)=∫Ew dxw(E) = \int_E w \, dx.

  1. For 1<p<∞1 < p < \infty, there is a constant CC with ∫ℝn(Mf)p w dx≤C∫ℝn∣f∣p w dx\int_{\R^n} (Mf)^p \, w \, dx \le C \int_{\R^n} \abs{f}^p \, w \, dx for all f∈Lp(w)f \in L^p(w) if and only if ww is in the Muckenhoupt class ApA_p.
  2. There is a constant CC with w({Mf>λ})≤Cλ∫ℝn∣f∣ w dxw(\set{Mf > \lambda}) \le \frac{C}{\lambda} \int_{\R^n} \abs{f} \, w \, dx for all f∈L1(w)f \in L^1(w) and λ>0\lambda > 0 if and only if w∈A1w \in A_1.

Remarks

Necessity in part 1 comes from testing on one cube. Let σ=w−1/(p−1)\sigma = w^{-1/(p - 1)} and f=σ𝟏Qf = \sigma \mathbf{1}_Q. On QQ one has Mf≥1∣Q∣∫QσMf \ge \frac{1}{\abs{Q}} \int_Q \sigma, and inserting this in the inequality gives the ApA_p bound for QQ, after a cut-off to make f∈Lp(w)f \in L^p(w). For sufficiency, one first shows the weak-type bound on Lp(w)L^p(w) from the ApA_p condition and the covering argument. Then one uses that an ApA_p weight is also in Ap−εA_{p - \varepsilon} for some ε>0\varepsilon > 0, which follows from a reverse Hölder inequality, and interpolates with the Marcinkiewicz interpolation theorem.

Example: w(x)=∣x∣w(x) = \abs{x} on ℝ\R is not in A2A_2, and indeed the weighted inequality fails for p=2p = 2. For 0<δ<10 < \delta < 1 let f=∣x∣−1𝟏[δ,1]f = \abs{x}^{-1} \mathbf{1}_{[\delta, 1]}; then ∫f2w=log⁡(1/δ)\int f^2 w = \log(1/\delta). For x∈[−1,1]x \in [-1, 1] the interval of radius 22 centred at xx contains [δ,1][\delta, 1], so Mf(x)≥14log⁡(1/δ)Mf(x) \ge \frac{1}{4} \log(1/\delta). Hence ∫(Mf)2w≥116log⁡2(1/δ)\int (Mf)^2 w \ge \frac{1}{16} \log^2(1/\delta), and the ratio of the two sides tends to infinity as δ→0\delta \to 0.

Going deeper

For a student

Muckenhoupt proved the theorem in 1972. Shortly after, Hunt, Muckenhoupt and Wheeden showed that the same ApA_p condition characterizes the weights for which the Hilbert transform is bounded on Lp(w)L^p(w), 1<p<∞1 < p < \infty. Coifman and Fefferman extended the sufficiency to general Calderón–Zygmund operators. The theorem is the starting point of weighted theory, including extrapolation and the sharp dependence of operator norms on [w]Ap[w]_{A_p}.
