Definition
Let and be integers. For and , let be independent random vectors in with , a multivariate normal distribution with unknown and unknown common . Let , let be the mean of group and the mean of all observations. The between-group and within-group matrices are One-way multivariate analysis of variance is the test of by a statistic that depends on the eigenvalues of . The standard statistics are:
- Wilks' lambda , which rejects for small values.
- Pillai's trace .
- The Hotelling–Lawley trace .
- Roy's largest root, the largest eigenvalue of .
Remarks
The matrix is invertible with probability when and is positive definite. Example: for , and are the between and within sums of squares of the one-way analysis of variance. Then , a decreasing function of the usual statistic, so MANOVA reduces to ANOVA. Non-example: with responses and groups of observations each, , so has rank at most , is not invertible, and whatever the data. For the four statistics are equivalent to Hotelling's statistic.
