Definition

Let 0<k<10 < k < 1, k′=1−k2k' = \sqrt{1 - k^2}, let K=K(k)K = K(k) be the complete elliptic integral of the first kind, and let qq be the nome of kk. For complex ζ\zeta let ϑ1(ζ)=2∑n≥0(−1)nq(n+1/2)2sin⁡((2n+1)ζ),ϑ2(ζ)=2∑n≥0q(n+1/2)2cos⁡((2n+1)ζ),\vartheta_1(\zeta) = 2\sum_{n \ge 0} (-1)^n q^{(n + 1/2)^2}\sin((2n + 1)\zeta), \qquad \vartheta_2(\zeta) = 2\sum_{n \ge 0} q^{(n + 1/2)^2}\cos((2n + 1)\zeta), ϑ3(ζ)=1+2∑n≥1qn2cos⁡(2nζ),ϑ4(ζ)=1+2∑n≥1(−1)nqn2cos⁡(2nζ)\vartheta_3(\zeta) = 1 + 2\sum_{n \ge 1} q^{n^2}\cos(2n\zeta), \qquad \vartheta_4(\zeta) = 1 + 2\sum_{n \ge 1} (-1)^n q^{n^2}\cos(2n\zeta) be the four Jacobi theta functions with nome qq. With ζ=πu/(2K)\zeta = \pi u/(2K), the Neville theta functions of u∈ℂu \in \C are θs(u)=π2kk′K ϑ1(ζ),θc(u)=π2kK ϑ2(ζ),θd(u)=π2K ϑ3(ζ),θn(u)=π2k′K ϑ4(ζ).\theta_s(u) = \sqrt{\frac{\pi}{2kk'K}}\,\vartheta_1(\zeta), \quad \theta_c(u) = \sqrt{\frac{\pi}{2kK}}\,\vartheta_2(\zeta), \quad \theta_d(u) = \sqrt{\frac{\pi}{2K}}\,\vartheta_3(\zeta), \quad \theta_n(u) = \sqrt{\frac{\pi}{2k'K}}\,\vartheta_4(\zeta).

Remarks

The constants are chosen so that θc(0)=θd(0)=θn(0)=1\theta_c(0) = \theta_d(0) = \theta_n(0) = 1 and θs′(0)=1\theta_s'(0) = 1. Check of θd(0)=1\theta_d(0) = 1: Jacobi's formula ϑ3(0)2=2K/π\vartheta_3(0)^2 = 2K/\pi gives θd(0)=π/(2K)⋅2K/π=1\theta_d(0) = \sqrt{\pi/(2K)}\cdot\sqrt{2K/\pi} = 1. Similarly ϑ2(0)2=2kK/π\vartheta_2(0)^2 = 2kK/\pi and ϑ4(0)2=2k′K/π\vartheta_4(0)^2 = 2k'K/\pi give θc(0)=θn(0)=1\theta_c(0) = \theta_n(0) = 1. The Jacobi elliptic functions are sn⁡u=θs(u)θn(u),cn⁡u=θc(u)θn(u),dn⁡u=θd(u)θn(u).\operatorname{sn} u = \frac{\theta_s(u)}{\theta_n(u)}, \qquad \operatorname{cn} u = \frac{\theta_c(u)}{\theta_n(u)}, \qquad \operatorname{dn} u = \frac{\theta_d(u)}{\theta_n(u)}. Non-example: ϑ3(πu/(2K))\vartheta_3(\pi u/(2K)) itself is not θd(u)\theta_d(u), since its value at u=0u = 0 is 2K/π>1\sqrt{2K/\pi} > 1; the factor π/(2K)\sqrt{\pi/(2K)} is needed. The function θd\theta_d is even with period 2K2K, and θs\theta_s is odd with θs(u+2K)=−θs(u)\theta_s(u + 2K) = -\theta_s(u).
