Definition

Let GG be a group with identity ee, and let ≤\le be a partial order on GG. The pair (G,≤)(G, \le) is an ordered group, or partially ordered group, if for all a,b,c∈Ga, b, c \in G, a≤b  ⟹  ca≤cb and ac≤bc.a \le b \implies ca \le cb \text{ and } ac \le bc.

Remarks

Example: ℤ2\Z^2 under addition, with (a,b)≤(c,d)(a, b) \le (c, d) when a≤ca \le c and b≤db \le d, is an ordered group. If a≤ca \le c and b≤db \le d, then a+x≤c+xa + x \le c + x and b+y≤d+yb + y \le d + y for each (x,y)∈ℤ2(x, y) \in \Z^2. Non-example: on ℤ\Z, let a⪯ba \preceq b when a=ba = b or (a,b)=(0,1)(a, b) = (0, 1). This is a partial order, but 0⪯10 \preceq 1 while 1⪯̸21 \not\preceq 2, so adding 11 breaks the condition. The positive cone of GG is P={g∈G:e≤g}P = \set{g \in G : e \le g}. It satisfies PP⊆PPP \subseteq P, P∩P−1={e}P \cap P^{-1} = \set{e} and gPg−1=PgPg^{-1} = P for each g∈Gg \in G. Conversely, each subset PP with these three properties defines an ordered group by a≤b  ⟺  a−1b∈Pa \le b \iff a^{-1} b \in P. For an abelian group the condition is written additively: a≤ba \le b implies a+c≤b+ca + c \le b + c.
