Builds on Probability measureSupport of a measureLp space

Definition

Let ∂𝔻={z∈ℂ:∣z∣=1}\partial\mathbb{D} = \set{z \in \C : \abs{z} = 1} and let μ\mu be a Borel probability measure on ∂𝔻\partial\mathbb{D} whose support is an infinite set. Give the polynomials the inner product ⟨p,q⟩=∫∂𝔻p(z)q(z)‾ dμ(z)\ip{p}{q} = \int_{\partial\mathbb{D}} p(z) \overline{q(z)} \, d\mu(z) of the Lebesgue space L2(∂𝔻,μ)L^2(\partial\mathbb{D}, \mu). For n≥0n \ge 0, the monic orthogonal polynomial Φn\Phi_n of degree nn is the unique polynomial of the form Φn(z)=zn+(terms of lower degree)\Phi_n(z) = z^n + \text{(terms of lower degree)} such that ⟨Φn,zk⟩=0for k=0,1,…,n−1.\ip{\Phi_n}{z^k} = 0 \quad \text{for } k = 0, 1, \dots, n - 1. The orthonormal polynomials are φn=Φn/∥Φn∥\varphi_n = \Phi_n / \norm{\Phi_n}.

Remarks

The condition on the support makes ⟨p,p⟩>0\ip{p}{p} > 0 for every nonzero polynomial pp, since a nonzero polynomial has finitely many zeros. Then Φn\Phi_n is znz^n minus its orthogonal projection onto the span of 1,z,…,zn−11, z, \dots, z^{n-1}, which shows existence and uniqueness. Such measures are called nontrivial.

Example: let μ\mu be the normalized arc length dθ/2πd\theta / 2\pi, with z=eiθz = e^{i\theta}. Then ⟨zn,zk⟩=12π∫02πei(n−k)θ dθ=0\ip{z^n}{z^k} = \frac{1}{2\pi} \int_0^{2\pi} e^{i(n - k)\theta} \, d\theta = 0 for k≠nk \ne n, so Φn(z)=zn\Phi_n(z) = z^n and ∥Φn∥=1\norm{\Phi_n} = 1.

Non-example: let μ=δ1\mu = \delta_1, the point mass at 11. Its support is finite, and the polynomial z−1z - 1 has norm 00. The orthogonality conditions for n=1n = 1 give ⟨z+c,1⟩=1+c=0\ip{z + c}{1} = 1 + c = 0, so Φ1=z−1\Phi_1 = z - 1, which is zero in L2(μ)L^2(\mu); the construction breaks down and does not give an orthonormal sequence.
