P-adic valuation

Builds on Prime numberDivisibility

Definition

Let pp be a prime number and let nn be a nonzero integer. The pp-adic valuation νp(n)\nu_p(n) is the largest natural number kk such that pk∣np^k \mid n. By convention, νp(0)=∞\nu_p(0) = \infty.

Remarks

For a positive integer nn, νp(n)\nu_p(n) is the exponent of pp in the prime factorization of nn. It is 00 when p∤np \nmid n. For example, ν2(40)=3\nu_2(40) = 3 and ν5(40)=1\nu_5(40) = 1, because 40=23⋅540 = 2^3 \cdot 5. For a nonzero rational number a/ba / b, one sets νp(a/b)=νp(a)−νp(b)\nu_p(a / b) = \nu_p(a) - \nu_p(b). The Lean library Mathlib sets νp(0)=0\nu_p(0) = 0 for its function on natural numbers.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
