Prime factorization
Builds on Prime number
Definition
Let be a positive integer. A prime factorization of is a finite list of prime numbers such that . For , the prime factorization is the empty list, with the empty product .
Remarks
We often group equal primes and write , with distinct primes and exponents . For example, the prime factorization of is , that is, . Each positive integer has a prime factorization, and the fundamental theorem of arithmetic says that it is unique.
