Number theory Proposition

P-adic valuation of a product

Builds on P-adic valuation

Statement

Let pp be a prime number, and let aa and bb be nonzero integers. Then νp(ab)=νp(a)+νp(b)\nu_p(a b) = \nu_p(a) + \nu_p(b), where νp\nu_p is the p-adic valuation.

Remarks

With the convention νp(0)=∞\nu_p(0) = \infty, the formula holds for all integers aa and bb. The proof uses Euclid's lemma. Write a=pia′a = p^i a' and b=pjb′b = p^j b' with p∤a′p \nmid a' and p∤b′p \nmid b'. Then p∤a′b′p \nmid a' b', so νp(ab)=i+j\nu_p(a b) = i + j. For example, ν2(12⋅10)=ν2(120)=3=2+1\nu_2(12 \cdot 10) = \nu_2(120) = 3 = 2 + 1.
