Poincaré's theorem that the ball and polydisc are not biholomorphic

Builds on Unit ball in C^nPolydiscBiholomorphismAutomorphism group

Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2. Let 𝔹n={z∈ℂn:∣z1∣2+⋯+∣zn∣2<1}\mathbb{B}^n = \set{z \in \C^n : \abs{z_1}^2 + \cdots + \abs{z_n}^2 < 1} be the unit ball and Δn={z∈ℂn:∣zj∣<1 for all j}\Delta^n = \set{z \in \C^n : \abs{z_j} < 1 \text{ for all } j} the unit polydisc. Then there is no biholomorphism from 𝔹n\mathbb{B}^n onto Δn\Delta^n.

Remarks

One proof compares automorphism groups. The holomorphic automorphisms of 𝔹n\mathbb{B}^n act transitively, so a biholomorphism F ⁣:Δn→𝔹nF \colon \Delta^n \to \mathbb{B}^n may be assumed to satisfy F(0)=0F(0) = 0. Then conjugation by FF maps the automorphisms of Δn\Delta^n fixing 00 isomorphically onto the automorphisms of 𝔹n\mathbb{B}^n fixing 00. By Cartan's uniqueness theorem both groups consist of linear maps. For 𝔹n\mathbb{B}^n it is the unitary group U(n)U(n), which is connected and not abelian for n≥2n \ge 2. For Δn\Delta^n it consists of the maps z↦(eiθ1zσ(1),…,eiθnzσ(n))z \mapsto (e^{i\theta_1} z_{\sigma(1)}, \dots, e^{i\theta_n} z_{\sigma(n)}) with σ\sigma a permutation, and its identity component is abelian. So the two groups are not isomorphic as topological groups, a contradiction. For n=1n = 1 both sets are the unit disc, so the hypothesis n≥2n \ge 2 is needed.

For a student

The theorem shows that there is no Riemann mapping theorem in several complex variables. It opened the study of biholomorphic invariants of domains, such as automorphism groups, invariant metrics and the geometry of the boundary. Another proof uses the boundary. The boundary of Δn\Delta^n contains nonconstant holomorphic discs, while the sphere bounding 𝔹n\mathbb{B}^n contains none. A limiting argument applied to a would-be biholomorphism turns this difference into a contradiction. Poincaré proved the result for n=2n = 2 by computing automorphism groups.
