Potential of a measure
Builds on Borel measureSupport of a measureNewtonian kernelLogarithmic kernel
Definition
Let and let be a lower semicontinuous function, called a kernel. Let be a positive Borel measure on with finite total mass and compact support. The potential of with respect to is the function ,
Remarks
The integral is well defined: a lower semicontinuous function is bounded below on the compact set , and is finite. Example: for the Dirac measure one gets . Example: with the Newtonian kernel on and the uniform probability measure on the unit sphere, for and for . Non-example: on off the diagonal is not a kernel in this sense. It tends to at the diagonal, so no value in on the diagonal makes it lower semicontinuous. The potential is itself lower semicontinuous, by Fatou's lemma. Standard kernels are the Newtonian kernel, the logarithmic kernel and the Riesz kernels with . Signed measures are handled by writing where both potentials are finite.
