Power of a test

Builds on Statistical hypothesis testType I and type II errors

Definition

Let XX be data whose law PθP_\theta depends on θ∈Θ\theta \in \Theta, and consider a hypothesis test of H0 ⁣:θ∈Θ0H_0 \colon \theta \in \Theta_0 against H1 ⁣:θ∈Θ1H_1 \colon \theta \in \Theta_1. Let the test reject H0H_0 when XX lies in a rejection region RR. The power function of the test is π(θ)=Pθ(X∈R)\pi(\theta) = P_\theta(X \in R) for θ∈Θ\theta \in \Theta. The power of the test at θ∈Θ1\theta \in \Theta_1 is π(θ)\pi(\theta).

Remarks

For θ∈Θ1\theta \in \Theta_1, the power is 1−β(θ)1 - \beta(\theta), where β(θ)\beta(\theta) is the probability of a type II error. For θ∈Θ0\theta \in \Theta_0, the value π(θ)\pi(\theta) is the probability of a type I error, and sup⁡θ∈Θ0π(θ)\sup_{\theta \in \Theta_0} \pi(\theta) is the size of the test. For a randomized test φ\varphi with values in [0,1][0, 1], the power function is π(θ)=Eθ[φ(X)]\pi(\theta) = E_\theta[\varphi(X)]. Example: let X∼𝒩(θ,1)X \sim \mathcal{N}(\theta, 1), H0 ⁣:θ=0H_0 \colon \theta = 0, H1 ⁣:θ>0H_1 \colon \theta > 0, and R={x>1.645}R = \set{x > 1.645}. Then π(θ)=1−Φ(1.645−θ)\pi(\theta) = 1 - \Phi(1.645 - \theta), where Φ\Phi is the standard normal distribution function; so π(0)≈0.05\pi(0) \approx 0.05 and π(2)≈0.64\pi(2) \approx 0.64. Non-example: π(0)≈0.05\pi(0) \approx 0.05 is not a power in this example, since 0∉Θ10 \notin \Theta_1; it is the size.
