Quermassintegral
Builds on Mixed volumeConvex bodyClosed ball
Definition
Let , let be a nonempty compact convex subset of (a convex body), and let be the closed unit ball of . For , the -th quermassintegral of is where is the mixed volume.
Remarks
By the Steiner formula, for . Special values: , is the surface area of , and , the volume of . Also , where is the mean width of . For , equals times the average, over all -dimensional linear subspaces , of the -dimensional volume of the orthogonal projection of onto ; this is Kubota's formula.
Example: , a ball of radius . By multilinearity, . For and this gives , half the perimeter , as expected.
Non-example: the set is not convex, so its mixed volumes are not defined. Indeed the length of is for and for , not one polynomial in .
