Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1, let KK be a nonempty compact convex subset of ℝn\R^n (a convex body), and let BB be the closed unit ball of ℝn\R^n. Then for every t≥0t \ge 0, vol⁡(K+tB)=∑j=0n(nj)V(K[n−j],B[j]) tj.\operatorname{vol}(K + tB) = \sum_{j=0}^{n} \binom{n}{j} V(K[n - j], B[j]) \, t^j. Here K+tBK + tB is the Minkowski sum and VV is the mixed volume. The notation K[n−j],B[j]K[n-j], B[j] means KK repeated n−jn - j times and BB repeated jj times. In particular vol⁡(K+tB)\operatorname{vol}(K + tB) is a polynomial in tt of degree at most nn.

Remarks

The formula is the defining expansion of mixed volumes for KK and BB, with λ1=1\lambda_1 = 1 and λ2=t\lambda_2 = t. One groups the terms by the number of copies of BB. The coefficients Wj(K)=V(K[n−j],B[j])W_j(K) = V(K[n-j], B[j]) are the quermassintegrals. Rewritten with the intrinsic volumes VjV_j, it reads vol⁡(K+tB)=∑j=0nκn−jVj(K) tn−j\operatorname{vol}(K + tB) = \sum_{j=0}^n \kappa_{n-j} V_j(K)\, t^{n-j}, where κm\kappa_m is the volume of the unit ball of ℝm\R^m.

Example: for a cube K=[0,a]3K = [0, a]^3 in ℝ3\R^3, vol⁡(K+tB)=a3+6a2t+3πat2+43πt3.\operatorname{vol}(K + tB) = a^3 + 6 a^2 t + 3 \pi a t^2 + \tfrac{4}{3} \pi t^3. The terms come from the cube, six slabs over the faces, twelve quarter cylinders along the edges, and eight eighths of a ball at the corners.

Convexity is needed for a polynomial: for K={0,1}⊆ℝK = \set{0, 1} \subseteq \R the length of K+tBK + tB is 4t4t for t≤12t \le \frac12 and 1+2t1 + 2t for t≥12t \ge \frac12.

Going deeper

For a student

The Steiner formula is the origin of quermassintegrals and intrinsic volumes. It explains why surface area is a derivative of volume: ddtvol⁡(K+tB)\frac{d}{dt} \operatorname{vol}(K + tB) at t=0t = 0 is nV(K[n−1],B)n V(K[n-1], B), the surface area of KK. Combined with the Brunn–Minkowski theorem it yields the isoperimetric inequality. Its local versions lead to curvature measures, and a version for sets of positive reach is due to Federer.
