Scaling function and refinement equation
Builds on Multiresolution analysisLp space
Definition
Let be a multiresolution analysis of . A scaling function of it is a function whose integer translates form an orthonormal basis of . The functions , , form an orthonormal basis of , and . Hence there is a unique sequence with with convergence in (see Lp space). This identity is the refinement equation (or two-scale equation) of , and is its low-pass filter; explicitly .
Remarks
Orthonormality of the translates of gives for all . If is integrable with , integrating the refinement equation gives . The function is then an orthonormal wavelet.
Example: in the Haar multiresolution analysis, and . So and otherwise. The formula for gives , the Haar wavelet.
Non-example: satisfies the refinement equation , but its integer translates overlap, so and it is not the scaling function of a multiresolution analysis in the sense above.
