Semimodular lattice
Builds on LatticeJoin and meetCovering relation
Definition
Let be a lattice with join and meet and . Write when covers , that is, and no satisfies . The lattice is semimodular, or upper semimodular, if for all , Dually, is lower semimodular if implies for all .
Remarks
Every modular lattice is both upper and lower semimodular, because in a modular lattice the intervals and are isomorphic.
Example: the lattice of partitions of a finite set, ordered by refinement with the coarser partition above, is upper semimodular. If a partition covers , then arises from by merging two blocks. Then arises from by merging the two blocks of that contain these two blocks. These blocks of are different, since otherwise and ; so . For a set of or more elements, this lattice is not modular.
Non-example: the pentagon lattice N5 with and incomparable to and . Apply the condition to the pair : and , but , so fails.
For a finite lattice, upper semimodularity holds if and only if the lattice is graded with a rank function satisfying for all .
