Partial differential equations Definition
Sine-Gordon equation
Definition
The sine-Gordon equation is the partial differential equation for an unknown real function of and , where subscripts denote partial derivatives.
Remarks
Example: the static kink is a solution. Put ; then and . So . Also , so , and . For , the moving kink is also a solution, by Lorentz invariance.
Non-example: is not a solution, because is not identically .
In the coordinates and the equation becomes . This is the form in which it arises for surfaces of Gaussian curvature .
