Combinatorics Theorem

Theorem on friends and strangers

Builds on Complete graph

Statement

Colour each edge of the complete graph K6K_6 red or blue. Then there are three vertices such that the three edges between them have the same colour.

Remarks

Proof: a vertex vv has 55 edges, so at least 33 of them have one colour, say blue, by the pigeonhole principle. If an edge between their ends is blue, it closes a blue triangle with vv. Otherwise these three ends form a red triangle. The number 66 is the least possible: K5K_5 has a colouring with no triangle of one colour. Thus the Ramsey number R(3,3)R(3, 3) is 66.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.
