Uniform convergence of series

Builds on Series of functionsUniform convergenceUniform convergence on a set

Definition

Let SS be a set, and let fn ⁣:S→ℂf_n \colon S \to \C be functions for n≥0n \ge 0. Let sN=∑n=0Nfns_N = \sum_{n=0}^{N} f_n be the partial sums of the series of functions ∑n=0∞fn\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} f_n, and let f ⁣:S→ℂf \colon S \to \C be a function. The series converges uniformly to ff on SS if the sequence (sN)(s_N) converges uniformly to ff on SS. That is, for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is an integer N0N_0 such that ∣sN(x)−f(x)∣<ε\abs{s_N(x) - f(x)} < \varepsilon for all N≥N0N \ge N_0 and all x∈Sx \in S.

Remarks

Equivalently, the series converges at each point of SS and sup⁡x∈S∣∑n>Nfn(x)∣→0\sup_{x \in S} \abs{\sum_{n > N} f_n(x)} \to 0 as N→∞N \to \infty. A Cauchy form also holds: the series converges uniformly on SS if and only if for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is N0N_0 with ∣∑n=M+1Nfn(x)∣<ε\abs{\sum_{n=M+1}^{N} f_n(x)} < \varepsilon for all N>M≥N0N > M \ge N_0 and all x∈Sx \in S. For a subset of a larger domain, this is uniform convergence on a set of the partial sums.

Example: let 0<r<10 < r < 1 and fn(x)=xnf_n(x) = x^n on S=[0,r]S = [0, r], with f(x)=1/(1−x)f(x) = 1/(1 - x). The tail is ∑n>Nxn=xN+1/(1−x)≤rN+1/(1−r)\sum_{n > N} x^n = x^{N+1}/(1 - x) \le r^{N+1}/(1 - r) for all x∈Sx \in S, and this bound tends to 00. So the series converges uniformly on [0,r][0, r].

Non-example: the same series on S=[0,1)S = [0, 1) converges at each point to 1/(1−x)1/(1 - x), but not uniformly. For each NN, the tail xN+1/(1−x)x^{N+1}/(1 - x) tends to ∞\infty as x→1−x \to 1^-, so its supremum over SS is infinite.

The Weierstrass M-test is the usual way to prove uniform convergence.
