Definition

Let D=ℝdD = \R^d and let (Z(s))s∈D(Z(s))_{s \in D} be a real random field with E[Z(s)2]<∞E[Z(s)^2] < \infty for all ss. The field is intrinsically stationary if for every h∈ℝdh \in \R^d:

  1. E[Z(s+h)−Z(s)]=0E[Z(s + h) - Z(s)] = 0 for all ss, and
  2. Var⁡(Z(s+h)−Z(s))\operatorname{Var}(Z(s + h) - Z(s)) does not depend on ss.

For such a field the variogram is the function 2γ ⁣:ℝd→[0,∞)2\gamma \colon \R^d \to [0, \infty) given by 2γ(h)=Var⁡(Z(s+h)−Z(s))=E[(Z(s+h)−Z(s))2],2\gamma(h) = \operatorname{Var}(Z(s + h) - Z(s)) = E[(Z(s + h) - Z(s))^2], and γ\gamma is the semivariogram.

Remarks

Every variogram satisfies γ(0)=0\gamma(0) = 0 and γ(−h)=γ(h)\gamma(-h) = \gamma(h). It is conditionally negative definite: ∑i,jaiajγ(si−sj)≤0\sum_{i,j} a_i a_j \gamma(s_i - s_j) \le 0 whenever ∑iai=0\sum_i a_i = 0. If ZZ is weakly stationary with covariance function C(h)=Cov⁡(Z(s+h),Z(s))C(h) = \operatorname{Cov}(Z(s + h), Z(s)), then γ(h)=C(0)−C(h)\gamma(h) = C(0) - C(h).

Example: the standard Wiener process (B(t))t∈ℝ(B(t))_{t \in \R}, two-sided with B(0)=0B(0) = 0, has B(t+h)−B(t)B(t + h) - B(t) normal with mean 00 and variance ∣h∣\abs{h}. So it is intrinsically stationary with 2γ(h)=∣h∣2\gamma(h) = \abs{h}, although its variance ∣t∣\abs{t} is not constant in tt.

Non-example: let XX be a standard normal random variable and Z(s)=s2XZ(s) = s^2 X on ℝ\R. The increment Z(s+h)−Z(s)=(2sh+h2)XZ(s + h) - Z(s) = (2sh + h^2) X has mean 00, but its variance (2sh+h2)2(2sh + h^2)^2 depends on ss, so clause 2 fails.
