Ordinary differential equations Lemma
An iterate of the Picard operator is a contraction
Builds on Picard operatorPicard–Lindelöf hypothesesLipschitz condition
Statement
Let satisfy the Picard–Lindelöf hypotheses at on with constants . Let be the set of continuous curves with for each , with the distance . Let be the Picard operator and let . Then for each integer and all , In particular, there is an such that is a contraction of : .
Remarks
Proof idea: by induction on , for each . The induction step integrates the bound of the previous step. The space is a complete metric space. So the Banach fixed point theorem applies to , and it gives a unique fixed point of . If , then itself is a contraction. The power avoids the need for a short time interval.
