Statement
Let be a complex matrix and let be nonzero. The Arnoldi iteration sets and, for , computes Here is the Euclidean norm. Suppose for . Let be the matrix with columns . Let be the matrix of the , with for , and let be its first rows. Then:
- is an orthonormal basis of the Krylov subspace ;
- , and is an upper Hessenberg matrix;
- if instead, the iteration stops at step , is invariant under , and every eigenvalue of is an eigenvalue of .
Remarks
The iteration is the Gram–Schmidt process, in its modified form in practice, applied to the vectors . Since lies in , clause 1 follows by induction, and clause 2 is the matrix form of the defining recurrence. Clause 3 holds because when . The eigenvalues of are the Ritz values; the extreme ones often approximate eigenvalues of well for much smaller than . Example: if is an eigenvector of for , then , the iteration stops at , and . If is Hermitian, then is Hermitian and Hessenberg, hence tridiagonal. Then the recurrence has only three terms, and it becomes the Lanczos algorithm.

For a student
Arnoldi is the engine of GMRES for nonsymmetric linear systems and of the implicitly restarted Arnoldi method for eigenvalues. Its cost grows with : step needs one product with and inner products, and all must be stored. This is why practical codes restart after a fixed number of steps. The relation reduces large problems on to small problems with .
