Bessel's integral
Builds on Bessel function of the first kind
Statement
Let be an integer and let be the Bessel function of the first kind of order . Then for every ,
Remarks
The generating function with gives , the Jacobi–Anger expansion. So is the -th Fourier coefficient . Writing , the sine term is odd in and the cosine term is even, which gives the formula on . Example: for and the integral is . The hypothesis that is an integer is needed: for non-integer the same integral defines the Anger function, which differs from . For and any , Schläfli's extension reads .
Going deeper
For a student
The integral turns many questions about into questions about an oscillatory integral. Applying stationary phase to it gives the large- asymptotics of . Differentiating under the integral sign checks Bessel's equation directly. It is also the bridge between Bessel functions and Fourier series of , which is how they enter Kepler's equation and frequency modulation.
