Chu–Vandermonde identity
Builds on Binomial coefficientPochhammer symbolHypergeometric series
Statement
Let be an integer.
- For all , where is the binomial coefficient.
- Equivalently, for all with , where is the terminating hypergeometric series and is the Pochhammer symbol.
Remarks
Both sides of part 1 are polynomials in and . For natural numbers and the identity is Vandermonde's identity, proved by counting -element subsets of a union of an -set and a -set. A polynomial in two variables that vanishes on is zero, so part 1 holds for all . Part 2 is also the case of Gauss's hypergeometric theorem, since .
Example: with and , the left side is , and the right side is .
The name records that the identity was known to Zhu Shijie long before Vandermonde.

For a student
In hypergeometric language it is the summation of a terminating at . It is the simplest case of a whole hierarchy of terminating summations, followed by the Pfaff–Saalschütz formula for and Dougall's formula. Its -analogue is the q-Vandermonde identity.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
