Closure operator

Builds on Partial order

Definition

Let (P,≤)(P, \le) be a partially ordered set. A closure operator on PP is a map c ⁣:P→Pc \colon P \to P such that, for all x,y∈Px, y \in P:

  1. x≤c(x)x \le c(x) (extensive);
  2. if x≤yx \le y, then c(x)≤c(y)c(x) \le c(y) (monotone);
  3. c(c(x))=c(x)c(c(x)) = c(x) (idempotent).

An element xx with c(x)=xc(x) = x is closed.

Remarks

Let XX be a topological space and PP the set of subsets of XX ordered by inclusion. The map sending AA to its closure A‾\overline{A} is a closure operator: A⊆A‾A \subseteq \overline{A}, A⊆BA \subseteq B gives A‾⊆B‾\overline{A} \subseteq \overline{B}, and A‾‾=A‾\overline{\overline{A}} = \overline{A}. On ℝ\R, the map c(x)=x+1c(x) = x + 1 is extensive and monotone but not idempotent, since c(c(0))=2≠1=c(0)c(c(0)) = 2 \ne 1 = c(0). The three clauses together are equivalent to one condition: x≤c(y)x \le c(y) if and only if c(x)≤c(y)c(x) \le c(y), for all x,y∈Px, y \in P. The closed elements determine cc: c(x)c(x) is the least closed element above xx. If (f,g)(f, g) is a Galois connection with lower adjoint ff, then g∘fg \circ f is a closure operator. The dual notion is an interior operator.
