Definition

For each n≥1n \ge 1, let (Ωn,ℱn)(\Omega_n, \mathcal{F}_n) be a measurable space, with ℱn\mathcal{F}_n a sigma-algebra, and let PnP_n and QnQ_n be probability measures on it. The sequence (Qn)(Q_n) is contiguous with respect to (Pn)(P_n), written Qn◃PnQ_n \triangleleft P_n, if for every sequence of events An∈ℱnA_n \in \mathcal{F}_n, Pn(An)→0  ⟹  Qn(An)→0.P_n(A_n) \to 0 \implies Q_n(A_n) \to 0. The sequences are mutually contiguous, written Pn◃▹QnP_n \triangleleft \triangleright Q_n, if Qn◃PnQ_n \triangleleft P_n and Pn◃QnP_n \triangleleft Q_n.

Remarks

Contiguity is the asymptotic analogue of absolute continuity; for constant sequences Pn=PP_n = P and Qn=QQ_n = Q it is the same as Q≪PQ \ll P. If Qn◃PnQ_n \triangleleft P_n, then every sequence of statistics that tends to 00 in PnP_n-probability also tends to 00 in QnQ_n-probability.

Example: let Pn=𝒩(0,1)⊗nP_n = \mathcal{N}(0, 1)^{\otimes n} and Qn=𝒩(h/n,1)⊗nQ_n = \mathcal{N}(h/\sqrt{n}, 1)^{\otimes n}, products of normal distributions, for a fixed h∈ℝh \in \R. Under PnP_n, the log-likelihood ratio log⁡(dQn/dPn)=hn−1/2∑iXi−h2/2\log(dQ_n/dP_n) = h n^{-1/2}\sum_i X_i - h^2/2 has the law 𝒩(−h2/2,h2)\mathcal{N}(-h^2/2, h^2) for every nn. By Le Cam's first lemma, a limit law LL of log⁡(dQn/dPn)\log(dQ_n/dP_n) under PnP_n with EeL=1E e^{L} = 1 implies Qn◃PnQ_n \triangleleft P_n, and here EeL=e−h2/2+h2/2=1E e^{L} = e^{-h^2/2 + h^2/2} = 1; by symmetry the sequences are mutually contiguous.

Non-example: let Pn=𝒩(0,1)⊗nP_n = \mathcal{N}(0, 1)^{\otimes n} and Qn=𝒩(1,1)⊗nQ_n = \mathcal{N}(1, 1)^{\otimes n}, and let An={xˉn>1/2}A_n = \set{\bar{x}_n > 1/2}, with xˉn\bar{x}_n the mean of the coordinates. Then Pn(An)=P(Z>n/2)→0P_n(A_n) = P(Z > \sqrt{n}/2) \to 0 but Qn(An)=P(Z>−n/2)→1Q_n(A_n) = P(Z > -\sqrt{n}/2) \to 1 for ZZ standard normal, so QnQ_n is not contiguous with respect to PnP_n.
