Statistics Nonparametric inference Theorem
Dvoretzky–Kiefer–Wolfowitz inequality
Builds on Empirical distribution functionIndependent and identically distributed random variablesCumulative distribution function
Statement
Let be i.i.d. real random variables with cumulative distribution function . Let be their empirical distribution function. Then for every ,
Remarks
Dvoretzky, Kiefer and Wolfowitz proved in 1956 a bound of the form with an unspecified constant . Massart showed in 1990 that works, and this constant cannot be lowered. The reduction to the uniform law on uses the quantile transform. The variable has the same law as , for uniform and the quantile function of . The supremum can only shrink under this change. The hard part is the sharp tail bound for the uniform case.
Example: a confidence band. Given , put , so that . Then the band contains the whole graph of with probability at least . For and , this gives .
The bound needs no assumption on : no continuity and no moments. It does need independence and a common law; for dependent data can stay far from .

For a student
The inequality is a quantitative form of the Glivenko–Cantelli theorem. Since , the Borel–Cantelli lemma gives almost surely. It also bounds the tail of the Kolmogorov–Smirnov statistic: for every , which matches the leading term of the limiting Kolmogorov law. It is a common tool in learning theory and in the analysis of nonparametric estimators, because it is non-asymptotic.
